Environmentally Friendly Pup Fetches Plastic From the Ocean

By: Nathan Grant

When was the last time you saw a dog actively helping the environment?

Lila, the black Labrador, has been diving into the ocean to retrieve lobsters for some time now.

Lila is Very Talented

In a video showcasing Lila’s talent, her owner, Alex Schulze explains, “I am devoted to the ocean and I trained my black lab Lila how to dive underwater and pick up toys. One day while out free diving, I had the idea of trying to get Lila to catch a live lobster. Sure enough she caught a lobster on her first try, and the rest was history.”

Alex had previously trained Lila to retrieve toys from his pool. He started the process by placing a toy in the very shallow part of the pool; slowly but surely, he was able to move the toy deeper and deeper, and Lila was eager to dive and grab it!

In an interview with Huffington Post, Alex explains, ā€œThe best advice that I could have for anyone teaching their dogs to catch a lobster, is to never push the dogs’ limits. Training might not go as quickly as expected, so you must take your time training the dogs and make sure that they are always comfortable.ā€

Lila’s Eco-Friendly Initiative

The dynamic duo has now decided to use Lila’s party trick for a good cause. Alex is the co-founder of 4Ocean, a company that makes bracelets out of recycled material from oceans and uses proceeds to help clean up those oceans.

Since Lila was a pro at diving for lobsters, picking up plastic and trash was a no-brainer.

We think that Lila and Alex are an inspiration! Pass their story along to your environmentally conscious friends!
